Walters and Palmer win as NCAA indoors season gets underway
Royan Walters and Chloe Palmer were both winners at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker, one of several meets held across the US as the NCAA Indoor season got under way over the weekend.
Walters, formerly of Petersfield High and now representing William Carey University, won the men’s long jump with 7.31m while Palmer, formerly of St Elizabeth Technical and competing unattached, won the women’s triple jump with 12.24m and was third in the long jump with 5.85m.
Cheyenne Cooper, formerly of William Knibb, was third in the women’s high jump with 1.60m.
Former Petersfield High thrower Jazmyn James, now of the University of Memphis, was third in the women’s shot put with 13.88m while her teammate Gianna Clayton was sixth with 12.91m.
Former Cornwall College athlete Jovel Madourie, also of William Carey, was fourth in the men’s 200m with 22.12 seconds and sixth in the 400m in 49.76 seconds.
At the Clemson Opener in South Carolina, Danielle Noble of Clemson placed second in the women’s high jump with 1.71m and her teammate Shantae Foreman was also second in the women’s long jump with 6.05m.
Shanque Williams was third in the women’s 300m with a time of 37.67 seconds, Foreman was sixth in 37.99 seconds and Brianna Campbell placed ninth in 39.03 seconds.
Campbell was also third in the 60m hurdles in 8.31 seconds.
Tara Bert of Florida A&M University was third in the women’s 600, running 1:33.46.
At the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danvile Season Opener, former Cornwall College athlete Zachary Cox was third in the men’s 300m with a time of 34.23 seconds.
At the Penn Opener at the University of Pennsylvania, former Cornwall College two-time ISSA Champs medallist KeSean-Jordan Rhooms of Morgan State University was third in the men’s high jump with 1.96m and fifth in the triple jump with 14.29m.
Rochele Solmon of Hampton University was third in the women’s shot put with 14.68m and her teammate Damali Williams placed seventh in the women’s weight throw with 16.24m.
On Friday’s opening day, former Mt Alvernia High standout Jayla-Shae Wright, now representing Morgan State, was fifth in the women’s indoor pentathlon with 3155 points.
