Former JAS President Lenworth Fulton dead at 70
THE local agricultural sector said farewell to one of its stalwarts on Monday as news broke of the death of Lenworth Fulton.
A former president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), the 70-year-old Fulton reportedly died after being hospitalised for almost two weeks, but up to press time no details were released on his illness.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Floyd Green, who worked closely with Fulton, took to social media to express condolence to Fulton’s family and friends.
“Jamaica has lost one of its quiet powerhouses — a man whose life’s work transformed the landscape of agriculture and strengthened the hands of farmers across the island. Through steadfast leadership, deep knowledge, and unwavering commitment, Mr Fulton pushed the sector toward greater resilience, innovation, and opportunity,” Green said.
“He championed rural communities, advocated fiercely for the people who feed our nation, and devoted his career to building a stronger agricultural future for generations to come. His impact is lasting. His legacy is undeniable.”
Green added: “Walk good, Mr Fulton. Your work lives on. True champion for Jamaican agriculture whose leadership strengthened farmers and communities across the island.”
Five years ago Fulton suffered a stroke, which paralysed the left side of his body, but he returned to lead the JAS for another four years after medical treatment.
Fulton was a graduate of the Jamaica School of Agriculture (now College of Agriculture, Science, and Education) and Tuskegee University in the United States, with a diploma in general agriculture and a bachelor’s degree in economics
He came to national attention during a 12-year stint at the helm of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs,
He was later selected to lead the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, having served as a member of its board for some time.
In July 2018 Fulton defeated Glendon Harris for the JSA presidency to take charge of the then 123-year-old organisation.
He replaced Norman Grant, who had led the JAS since 2012. Fulton walked away from the JAS top job in 2024.
