Glenmuir hunt lead in daCosta quarters
Glenmuir High could take a big step towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition when they take on McGrath High in the quarter-finals at Glenmuir High today at 3:00 pm.
Glenmuir High, who last won the daCosta Cup in 2012, and Cornwall College are joint leaders in Group A, both on three points after wins in their opening quarter-final games on Saturday, and another win today would put them closer to a place in the top four.
The other three fixtures in the second set of matches will be played on Wednesday afternoon. These are Kemps Hill High against Cornwall College in Group A, and the Group B games, Christiana High versus St Elizabeth Technical High School, and Dinthill Technical versus Clarendon College.
McGrath’s quest for a first daCosta Cup title, could be on the line today as a second loss in the quarter-finals, a third straight loss could mean an end to that ambition.
The St Catherine-based school, runners-up last season, after winning the Ben Francis Cup in the 2023 season, seems to have hot a road block after losing their final round-of-16 game to Dinthill and then lost to 10-man Cornwall on Saturday, failing to score in both games.
McGrath won their first five games in the play-off stages, topping their Round of 32 group after winning all three games by a 7-0 aggregate and won the first two games in the round of 16 by a 4-0 aggregate.
Glenmuir have been cruising since failing to win any of their Group I play-off games and finished second in their group behind Garvey Maceo High.
Since then, the Andre Peart-coached team have won six of their next seven games, drawing only against Manchester High in the Round of 32, giving up a two goals lead to end 2-2.
On Saturday they had to dig deep against a Kemps Hill team they were meeting for the third time this season after the teams had shared wins in the first round.
Glenmuir ran out easy winners 3-0 their first time they met but were ambushed 1-0 in the play-offs and after leading 2-0 at half time on Saturday, were forced on the back foot for most of the second half.
For McGrath to win today, top scorer Jimm Mitchell must end his scoring slump after scoring 18 goals all season, five since the start of the play-offs.
Orane Watson leads Glenmuir High with 30 goals all season, Orel Miller and Dunstin Cohen are potent scorers and are capable of taking up the responsibility to go for goals.
