Inner Circle to debuts Stay Strong at NY relief concert Dec 12
One of the acts scheduled to perform on the December 12 Jamaica Strong concert, Inner Circle, will use the occasion to debut its song Stay Strong, in keeping with the event’s benevolent theme.
Jamaica Strong, which takes place at UBS Arena in Long Island, New York, will raise funds for people affected by Hurricane Melissa which struck Jamaica on October 28 as a Category 5 system.
Shaggy, Sean Paul, Gramps Morgan, and Marcia Griffiths are also expected to take the stage.
Ian Lewis, co-founder and bass guitarist for Inner Circle, told the Jamaica Observer that he and his bandmates have followed developments in Jamaica before and after the hurricane.
“It is important for us to record this song. In fact, it is important for all reggae artistes to record positive music and songs to inspire the people, so the people can be motivated and the donors can be motivated to help. Every mickle mek a muckle,” he said.
New York-based Irie Jam Radio and Jammins Entertainment, as well as RoadBlock Radio out of New Jersey, are co-promoters of Jamaica Strong. They are hoping to raise US$1 million which will be donated to relevant agencies in Jamaica to assist with the relief effort.
Hurricane Melissa caused severe damage to several rural parishes, including St Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and St James. Homes, businesses, hospitals, and infrastructure were destroyed by the storm. Approximately 45 people died as a result of Hurricane Melissa, according to the Jamaican Government.
Lewis and his older brother Roger, who plays rhythm guitar, started Inner Circle in Kingston in 1968.
They had a number of hit songs during the 1970s with lead singer Jacob Miller, including Tenement Yard and Forward Ever, Backward Never.
Based in Miami, they are known globally for the 1990s anthems Bad Boys and Sweat.
