Major Danger eyes seasonal win in Ahwhofah Sprint
MAJOR Danger, conditioned by Anthony Nunes, is a horse with enough class and talent to lead the pack in the $1.25-million Ahwhofah Sprint at Caymanas Park this afternoon, despite not winning a race in eight starts this season.
The five-year-old, American-bred bay horse Major Danger was outsprinted over five furlongs (1,000m) on November 22, finishing seventh by 9½ lengths behind Prince Amaan, Champion Bubbler, and Atlantic Convoy at this Overnight Allowance level.
However, he showed promise with a third-place finish behind Supernatural Power and Tiz Tok over a mile (1,600m) on October 20 in a higher class, making him a contender here.
Major Danger has trained fairly well coming into this race, and despite carrying top weight of 57.0kgs (126 lb) he could emerge victorious. His past performances suggest he has the speed and stamina to make a strong finish so he’s worth watching in this afternoon’s sprint.
The contest going over six furlongs (1,200m) is positioned as the ninth event on the 10-race card with a post time of 4:20 pm. First race is at 11:30 am.
Zulu Warrior and Atlantic Convoy seem to be Major Danger’s toughest competitors in the Ahwhofah Sprint.
Zulu Warrior has won three times this season from 12 starts, including a win at this level on November 15, beating Oil Machine over today’s distance by two lengths. His recent form is impressive, with a second-place finish by just a length behind California Crown over five and a half furlongs (1,100m) on November 29.
Atlantic Convoy’s inconsistency could be a factor in this race. With only one second-place finish and one third-place finish from 10 starts, he’s yet to break through for a win this season. However, his recent form shows he has the potential to make a statement — finishing third behind Prince Amaan and Champion Bubbler at five furlongs straight on November 22, which suggests he has speed.
Still, his inconsistency might give Major Danger and Zulu Warrior an edge. But don’t count him out just yet — Atlantic Convoy’s capability to perform on this track and distance could make him a dark horse in this race.
