From ambition to action: Damani Reid’s journey of growth and opportunity

AT just 29 years old Damani Reid has established an impressive career in finance and investment management, a journey driven by a passion that has remained constant throughout the years. Having attended Ardenne High School and later pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Reid has always demonstrated the drive and discipline needed to excel in a competitive industry.

Before joining Sygnus, Reid spent four years at the Financial Services Commission as a research analyst where he developed a strong regulatory background and research skills that span macroprudential analysis, market surveillance, and policy development. In 2023 he joined Sygnus Credit Investments Limited (SCI) as a manager in the Investment Management Unit, a role that positioned him at the heart of the Caribbean’s alternative investment landscape.

Reid attests that this position aligns perfectly with his passion for nation-building. “A firm and unwavering desire to acquire a wealth of knowledge, primarily as it relates to the world of business and finance, led me into this field. Few roles offer a better vantage point than private credit where I get a front-row seat to the Caribbean’s evolving business landscape,” he shared. “At SCI, the largest source of alternative financing in the region, I have the opportunity to engage with ambitious and seasoned businesses and leaders. I am also passionate about nation-building, and this role enables me to support firms that drive economic growth both in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.”

That same desire for growth was nurtured through his participation in the Young Sygnisian Mentorship Programme, a 13-week professional development initiative designed to cultivate leadership, resilience, and authenticity among emerging professionals. Through its mix of bi-weekly virtual and in-person sessions, the programme provided mentorship and skills training in key areas such as personal branding, communication, emotional intelligence, and leadership development.

For Reid, the experience was transformative. “One of the most impactful lessons I learned, particularly during the sessions where we picked the brains of some of the brightest leaders in Jamaica, is the importance of individualism anchored by a strong sense of purpose and self,” he recalls.

Throughout the 13 weeks participants engaged with a dynamic line-up of facilitators. Laura Butler shared insights on professional etiquette and workplace confidence; Naomi Garrick led an engaging session on personal branding and networking with purpose; and Jason Morris, one of Sygnus’s founders, delivered a powerful presentation on entrepreneurship and investing in your dreams. Reid noted that these sessions were not only educational but deeply motivating, offering real-world perspectives on success, resilience, and leadership.

“Mentorship has been pivotal in refining my sense of purpose, both professionally and personally. By leveraging the experiences and wisdom shared by my mentors I have gained the confidence to face big obstacles, contribute my perspectives alongside industry stalwarts, and support my colleagues by paying forward the same tips and tricks passed on to me,” he said.

Reid’s learnings came to life during the programme’s Innovative Pitch Challenge, an activity that placed teamwork and creativity at the forefront. “The Innovative Pitch Challenge reinforced the value of teamwork in problem-solving. As the poet John Donne wrote, ‘No man is an island.’ Each team member brought unique skills that collectively shaped the success of the project,” he said.

Speaking on the mentorship programme, he said, “These programmes matter because they equip young professionals with mentorship, confidence, and practical skills that accelerate growth. They also cultivate future leaders who are prepared to innovate, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.”

His commitment to continuous improvement and a results-driven mindset allowed him to distinguish himself among his peers quickly. Since completing the programme Reid has risen to senior manager (acting) within the Investment Management Unit, overseeing SCI, the largest private credit fund in the Caribbean.
