Heavyweights Sts Peter and Paul, Lannaman’s clash in Henriques Cup final
Title favourites Sts Peter and Paul will face Lannaman’s in the final of the Jamaica Independent Schools Association National Under-12 Henriques Cup knockout competition today; both teams eyeing redemption with the season’s first title up for grabs.
The final will kick off at 10:30 am at Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory.
Lannaman’s, who lost at this stage of the competition last season, will be looking to make amends and return to their title-winning ways, after a few years without getting their hands on knockout or league trophies.
Both teams were made to sweat in their respective semi-final assignments on Wednesday as their opponents put them to the test in closely contested matchups.
Sts Peter and Paul, the defending league champions, came out on top by a 1-0 margin over Liberty Academy in a fiery clash that saw red cards being issued to one Liberty player and an assistant coach, while Lannaman’s outlasted Hillel Academy 2-0 with both goals arriving in extra time.
Hillel and Liberty will contest the third-place decider at 9:00 am.
It was a result that Lannaman’s Head Coach Haron “German” Martin was extremely proud of and one that he believes showed the quality of the team, as they head into today’s title decider.
“I thought it was a good game, I was very happy with how the team played. After losing in the final last year, we were ensuring that we made it to the final and go a step further and lift the trophy,” said Haron.
“Lannaman’s is a school that always has a good programme. Some players are out and no longer here but we always have players coming up the ranks and these players, I have to give them credit, they did a very good job,” Haron told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, Sts Peter and Paul will also be looking for redemption after losing to Lannaman’s at the semi-final stage last season.
Head Coach Kemar Edwards is hoping the team can lift its first title after a dominant season so far.
“Last year we met and we got beaten on penalties, so this year I think the boys are looking forward to a great game and are looking forward to lifting the Henriques Cup,” said Edwards.
“We have a strong team, the season so far has been very good, we are unbeaten and we are now in a final and we are really proud of the lads. We have a young team but I think the boys need this victory, so hopefully with the help of the Almighty, they can go out and do it.”
Sts Peter and Paul have been the form team in the Henriques and Alberga Cup competitions, having not dropped any points this season. They have so far conceded only one goal.
