Richard King nets Euro trophy after stunning St Mirren Premier Sports Cup win
Reggae Boyz defender Richard King won his first major trophy in European football after St Mirren beat Scottish giants Celtic 3-1 in the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday.
Centre back King played the full 90 minutes as his side stunned Celtic, thanks to a double from Jonah Ayunga and Marcus Fraser.
The 24-year-old, who joined St Mirren in July after winning three Jamaica Premier League titles and the Concacaf Caribbean Cup with Cavalier FC, played a crucial role in the club’s success in the tournament.
King scored twice in his seven appearances, including in the 4-1 semi-final win over Motherwell FC.
He also converted from the spot in their penalty shootout wins in the second round and quarterfinals against Hearts and Kilmarnock respectively.
King joins the rare list of Jamaican born players to win a title in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Another Jamaican Jalmaro Calvin, who also joined from Cavalier FC in the summer, is expected to get a winner’s medal despite not making an appearance in the competition. He was named a substitute in three of the St Mirren’s games.
