Coach Thomas hails Molynes United’s renewed drive
WITH the struggling Molynes United going unbeaten in their last two Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League games, Head Coach Jermaine Thomas believes the team is more driven than before to climb up the standings.
Molynes held Harbour View to a goalless draw at the Harbour View Stadium on Sunday.
Both teams played the majority of the second half with 10 men as Harbour View’s Roshawn Oldfield and Molynes United’s Marlon Pennicooke were shown second yellow cards following a confrontation.
Harbour View created several goalscoring opportunities in the closing minutes of the game, but Molynes held firm to pick up a point.
The result for Molynes comes days after picking up their first win of the season against defending champions Cavalier FC.
It means they’ve collected four points from two games, compared to five from their first nine.
Thomas believes the adjustments the team made during the six-week break caused by Hurricane Melissa are bearing fruit.
“We did some additional work physically because we needed to have gotten their conditions up a bit,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“As it relates to tactical [aspects] — them understanding their responsibilities, understanding the system — and they are intrinsically motivated more than ever because they want to win, they want to do well, and seeing themselves at the foot of the table, it’s not a good sight.”
Molynes remain in 13th but are just one point adrift of safety and six away from a top six spot.
Thomas says the team is eager to continue their new-found momentum.
“We would have gone 10 games without a win, and it’s difficult to get the dressing room alive, so getting three points last week, getting a point here, it would have done a whole lot for us. So I’m just hoping that, having played two in probably four days, we’ll be able to come back mentally and really get ourselves sorted out.”
Despite the draw, seventh-placed Harbour View on 13 points are unbeaten since the restart under new Head Coach Vassel Reynolds, picking up five points from three games.
“We have been conceding a number of goals — six goals in the last two games — so, from that respect, we’re very pleased with what the boys would have employed in the game defensively,” said Reynolds.
“I thought it was, overall, a decent game, especially in the second half. We really played some good football, especially in the last 20 minutes. We could have gotten a goal or two and get three points from this game but overall, honestly, I’m pretty pleased — especially [with] the fact that we would have kept a clean sheet,” he added.
