Full 100 ‘Bunny’
SHAW... I always credit the team because they’re the ones that go out there with me, battle with me, fight with me, and encourage me

Full 100 ‘Bunny’

Reggae Girlz star Shaw hails teammates after becoming Man City’s first-ever centurion

AFTER hitting the 100-goal milestone for Manchester City on Sunday, Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz Captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw says she was always confident of becoming a centurion for the club.

The talismanic striker, who joined Manchester City in 2021, became the first woman to surpass the 100-mark for the English club when she struck four times in their 6-1 win over visitors Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL).

Shaw, who went into the game on 99 goals, immediately got to the century mark as she opened the scoring in the 37th minute. She would end the night on 103 goals after netting in the 45th, 84th and 94th minute.

The two-time reigning WSL Golden Boot winner, who leads the season’s scoring with 12 goals, says she’s proud to have created history.

“It’s a really good feeling and a big milestone for me. If you’d told me I’d have scored four goals I’ve have said no,” said Shaw.

“But for me, coming into the game I knew if I scored I [would] achieve this milestone, so I was hungry and confident going out there. The players said they’d try their best to get me to 100 so it was a really good feeling.”

Shaw, Jamaica’s all-time leading scorer with 60 goals, extends her goalscoring prowess for City after overtaking Georgia Stanway’s 67 goals in March 2024.

While it’s a significant personal achievement, Shaw hailed her City teammates for their role in her success.

“For me, it’s a team. I always credit the team because they’re the ones that go out there with me, battle with me, fight with me, and encourage me,” he said. “When I’m low they’re with me — and when I’m at my highest they are as well. I have to credit the team as well.”

Man City Manager Andree Jeglertz believes this is just the beginning for Shaw as he expects more records in the future.

“This is my first season working with her but what she’s done before — just being around her everyday and helping her become a little bit better, and what she’s doing for our team — it’s amazing. She should be very proud of what she’s done so far but I also know there’s more to come,” he said.

“I think all our players are role models for young girls and for football players in general — they’re doing a great job in that. And it’s also how she is as a teammate, because that means something also for the other ones that if you are a superstar and not working hard everyday or following the team rules, then there will be challenges. She is always doing her best, and that’s the most important thing.”

City also compiled a congratulatory video for Shaw which included Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt.

“I just want to say congrats for reaching 100 goals for Man City. Very proud of you; you know I always watch your journey, always supporting, and that won’t ever change. Looking forward to the 200 now,” said Bolt.

Shaw’s run is one of the most impressive in European football. Her 34 goals for French club Bordeaux and her 103 goals for City means she now has an incredible 137 goals in just 158 appearances in her professional career.

The 2023/2024 WSL Player of the Year also holds the record for most hat-tricks in the league’s history, with eight.

Shaw’s goals have helped City to remain top of the table with 30 points, six clear of defending champions Chelsea.
