Patient Steps To Love

As Kevin Ferguson awaited his bride Leondra Madden at the altar, few would suspect that, years prior, he had harboured a crush so paralysing he could barely speak in her presence. But eventually silence gave way to a deep connection.

The setting was the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) campus, the year was 2018, and the plot was a familiar one. It was a case of boy meets girl, instantly captivated yet too shy to make a move. While the dynamic might sound standard, for Kevin that first encounter sparked feelings that were anything but ordinary.

“I was visiting NCU to drop off my application documents and visit my sister. I saw a friend approaching us and, suddenly, there she was. For a moment, it seemed the world stopped spinning and every thought escaped my mind,” Kevin told Tuesday Style Vows (TSV).

Leondra noticed the nerves, but she also felt the steady presence underneath.

“I liked his character, but in a platonic way. Initially, he was so shy he could barely talk or even look at me. I could tell he was a good guy, though,” Leondra recalled. “We got to know each other over the years, and a fondness grew for him.”

Years of friendship couldn’t dull Kevin’s feelings, but it took a pivotal moment in November 2022 to change the dynamic. After an ice cream hangout with members from his church group, where he almost let the moment pass again, Kevin realised on the drive home that he couldn’t wait any longer. He sent a text: “I need to say something to you.” Leondra teased him immediately. “And you had all day!?” But when the truth came out, so did hers. “To my surprise, somebody had been holding out, because she felt the same way,” Kevin said. “The rest was history.”

Once the truth was out they quickly became inseparable. Shedding the last remnants of his shyness, Kevin proposed to Leondra on February 22, 2025 with the nuptials set for October 19 at Hibiscus Lodge Hotel in Ocho Rios.

“My parents said they wanted to go out to eat dinner instead of cooking,” Leondra recalled. “We went to the roof of the restaurant. I was getting a bit confused and scared cause it was so dark. But, lo and behold, there was Kevin, who travelled from St Catherine to Drax Hall just to propose. It was candlelit and I got the cutest bouquet. He went down on one knee and opened a box to reveal my dazzling ring and asked me to marry him. I was stunned but, of course, I said yes!”

Their long-awaited wedding day arrived eight months later, manifesting as an intimate affair orchestrated by PlusOne Wedding Services. With the emotional swell of Ruelle’s I Get to Love You setting the tone, Leondra walked up the aisle, escorted by her father, Leon Madden. Attired in a fit and flare gown by Stunning Gown Ja, she was the epitome of effortless elegance. At the altar, meanwhile, a confident Kevin waited, ready to exchange vows during the ceremony officiated by Dr Roy Dennis.

The celebrations would later flow into the reception, where the intimate setting, flawlessly catered by Hibiscus Lodge, instantly created the warm atmosphere of a joyous family dinner. After heartfelt toasts from loved ones and the cutting of their marble cake with butter cream frosting, Kevin and Leondra took centre stage, dancing to Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé’s Perfect Duet. It was a moment that cemented their journey — the shy guy who got the girl and their happily ever after.

The newly-weds honeymooned at Princess Senses The Mangrove Hotel in Hanover.
