Mona, St Catherine to contest Walker Cup final

Mona, St Catherine to contest Walker Cup final

Defending champions Mona High and St Catherine High will contest the ISSA Walker Cup final following identical 3-2 wins over Charlie Smith and Kingston College (KC), respectively, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

In the curtain raiser, Mona owed their victory to Franklyn Mitcham (38th), Savi-K Morton (42nd ) and Joenaldo Payne (59th) as they marched into their second consecutive final.

Orlando Grant (39th) and Anthony Bryan (44th) had twice pulled Charlie Smith levelled and they crashed out, throwing everything at Mona, which stood firm until the end.

In the second match, St Catherine gained revenge on KC, which defeated them in the Manning Cup final last year.

Dwight Gentles scored two beautiful goals in the seventh and 69th minutes, while the outstanding Kadean Young netted in the 44th minute.

KC got their goals from Kajay Fletcher in the 45+3 and Jamal Fraser in the 85th with a screamer. But their late rally fell short and the Fames Purples rallied late and missed a glorious chance in the dying seconds to tie the game.

But they have no one to blame for a below par display lacking real intent and urgency.

The 2024 winner Mona, will be seeking their second lien on the Cup on Friday, while St Catherine will be hunting their third crown, having won in 2019 and 2021.
