Mount Pleasant takes on Racing United in rescheduled JPL
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former champions Mount Pleasant FA will be going after a third straight win in the Jamaica Premier League on Wednesday when they play away to Racing United in a rescheduled game at Ferdie Neita Park, starting at 3:00 pm.
Wednesday’s game is one of several that were postponed to accommodate Mount Pleasant FA’s participation in the Caribbean Cup competition which they won for the first time and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
Since they returned Mount Pleasant FA have taken seven of a possible nine points and have shot up the points tables into fourth place with 16 points from eight games, just ahead of defending champions Cavalier SC on goal-difference.
The Theodore Whitmore coached team, who have not lost all season, won all three games they played against Racing United who were playing their initial season in the league but will face a more experienced team Wednesday.
Racing United, who are in third place on 22 points, are coming off a big 4-1 win over Cavalier SC on Sunday and will be full of confidence as they seek their first win over the three time finalists.
Nickyle Ellis scored a double for Racing United against Cavalier SC and will hope to extend his scoring run against Mount Pleasant FA who have only conceded six goals.
Warner Brown, who joined the St Ann based club from Arnett Gardens in the off-season, seems to be returning to his prolific scoring ways, scoring braces in his team’s last two games.
Meanwhile on Monday, Spanish Town Police FC created history, winning their first game in the Jamaica Premier League, edging former champions Waterhouse FC 2-1 in the first game of a double header at the newly refurbished Anthony Spaulding Complex.
After back-to-back heavy losses, conceding 15 goals, Spanish Town Police FC, the winners of the JFF Championships last season, scored their first win in their 12th game.
Meanwhile, Montego Bay United returned to the top of the points tables, spoiling Arnett Gardens’ first game at home, winning 1-0 in the second game.
It was not pretty for Spanish Town Police FC but they savoured the three points with goals from Diamond Clarke in the 74th minute and Jordan Elliston in time added while Colorado Murray had equalised for Waterhouse FC in the 85th minute.
Despite the win, Spanish Town Police FC are still at the foot of the points tables on five points while Waterhouse FC have lost three in a row and are winless in six games and in ninth position.
Clarke gave Spanish Town Police the lead when he scored a spectacular goal from outside the penalty area from the right side beating goalkeeper Akeem Bernard into the far corner.
Murray levelled for Waterhouse FC in the 85th minute, turning nicely inside the Spanish Town Police FC’s 18 yards box to beat goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel with a left foot shot.
Despite trying to not lose, Spanish Town Police had the last laugh when Elliston scored from close range after catching Waterhouse FC on a quick counterattack.
In the second game, Okeemo Jones’ 81st minute goal, saw Montego Bay United win for the first time since the restart of the league and improved to 26 points, two more than Portmore United with Racing United in third place with 22 points and Mount Pleasant FA fourth on 16 points.
