PNP’s Isat Buchanan condemns alleged rape of CASE student
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition Spokesperson on Youth and Human Rights, Isat Buchanan, has condemned the alleged rape of a female student of the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE), calling for urgent action to address student safety concerns.
In a release on Wednesday, Buchanan said, “I am deeply concerned by the unfortunate and distressing ordeal involving a female student at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education who was reportedly raped after exiting a taxi and while proceeding onto the campus,” Buchanan said. “This incident has understandably caused fear, anger and distress among students and the wider academic community.”
Buchanan described sexual violence as a serious violation of human rights and said it must be met with decisive, transparent and compassionate action. In that regard, he formally called on the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to provide timely and appropriate updates on the status of the investigation.

He added that relevant information should be communicated to the institution through recognised student bodies, while fully safeguarding the privacy and dignity of the survivor.
Buchanan also called on relevant authorities, including campus security, transport regulators and social support agencies, to urgently address the safety concerns highlighted by the incident. He noted that these concerns were clearly stated during a recent student protest, which raised longstanding issues relating to on-campus and off-campus shuttling, campus access, lighting, security arrangements and student welfare.
Additionally, Buchanan urged Minister of Gender Olivia Grange to become directly engaged in the matter.
“I believe it is critical that the minister meets with students, student leadership and the school’s administration to support the survivor, listen to the concerns raised, and assist in coordinating sustainable solutions to the issues identified,” he said.
“Our young people deserve safe learning environments where their dignity and security are protected,” Buchanan added. “This moment requires leadership, accountability and meaningful action. I stand in solidarity with the students of CASE and reaffirm my commitment to advocating for justice, transparency and stronger protections for all students.”
