Clarendon, Cornwall to lock horns for Ben Francis Cup glory
ST ANN, Jamaica — Clarendon College and Cornwall College, two of Jamaica’s most decorated schoolboy football teams, are set to clash in the ISSA Ben Francis Cup final on Saturday after scoring contrasting wins in Thursday’s semi-finals.
The teams have combined to win the Ben Francis Cup 11 times — Cornwall College are tied with St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Glenmuir High with seven triumphs, while Clarendon College have claimed the title four times.
Clarendon lost to STETHS in the Ben Francis Cup championship match last year.
Shakeem Gibson scored twice as Cornwall College defeated McGrath High 2-0 at Drax Hall Complex in St Ann.
It was the second time in two weeks that Cornwall were getting the better of McGrath after defeating them in the daCosta Cup quarter-final round in Montego Bay, St James.
Cornwall dominated McGrath on Thursday, and after missing early scoring chances, Gibson shot them in the lead in the 38th minute, firing powerfully from just inside the 18-yard box high into the goal.
He returned in the 81st minute to seal the deal when he was set up by Kavontae Gooden. Gibson rolled the ball past goalkeeper Orlando Griffiths into the left corner of the goal.
In the semi-final match at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz, Clarendon College beat Manning’s School 4-1 on penalties after the teams played out a 1-1 result in regulation time.
Clarendon had given up a first-half lead but held their nerve to comfortably prevail in the penalty shoot-out.
Anthony Reid had given Clarendon College the advantage after 12 minutes, but Jordan Turner drew Manning’s level in the 53rd to force the penalty kicks.
