Phenomenal Power blows away competition in stunning debut
Trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes has a reputation for producing top-notch two-year-olds, and Phenomenal Power is the latest example.
After impressing in morning workouts, the two-year-old American-bred dark bay colt Phenomenal Power lived up to expectations in his debut run, annihilating the competition by ever-increasing 17 lengths on a common canter in the $1.8-million maiden special weight contest for native-bred and imported two-year-olds over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m) on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Nunes believes he’s unearthed a talented juvenile, and this dominant performance has certainly generated excitement around Phenomenal Power’s future prospects.
“He [Phenomenal Power] is a special horse. We are just hoping that he stays healthy and sound. His preparations were smooth throughout and so we really had no question marks. It was a decent performance and so we are going to take it one day at a time with him,” Nunes told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Ridden by Raddesh Roman, Phenomenal Power got off to a good start at the off, tracking in second behind pacesetter Pepper Stepper (Robert Halledeen). As Pepper Stepper increased his lead going into the half-mile turn, Roman unleashed Phenomenal Power approaching the distance, and the colt surged past to take command entering the lane for the final two furlongs (400m) of the race.
From there, it was smooth sailing as the ACK Stables-owned Phenomenal Power, who sprinted clear in deep stretch for an easy win at the wire. It was a one-two-three finish for Nunes as stablemates Prodigious Power (USA), under Linton Steadman, finished in second place, and Dillsbury, ridden by Dane Dawkins, took third place. Prodigious Power is also owned by ACK Stakes, while Dillsbury is owned by Michros.
After splits of 23.1 x 47.2 x 1:00.2, the final time was recorded at 1:07.1.
Phenomenal Power is bred by Violence out of the Quality Road mare Drinking.
