St Catherine beat Mona on penalties to win Walker Cup
St Catherine High defeated Mona High 4-3 on penalties after battling to an exciting 3-3 draw in normal time to win the ISSA Walker Cup on Friday.
It was St Catherine’s third win in the last six years, having won in 2019 and 2021.
Devrahj Singh gave Mona a fifth-minute lead, but Dwight Gentles responded with two goals for St Catherine in the 22nd and 34th minutes for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Joenaldo Payne pulled Mona level in the 55th minute before their talisman Sean Leighton gave them the lead two minutes later.
But Kevin Grey popped up with a sweet, well-placed volley to equalize for St Catherine in the 80th minute, sending the game into the dreaded penalty shootout.
Marlon Jones, Jordan Mathias, Dwight Gentles and Kadean Young scored for St Catherine with Tchane Riley missing their third kick.
Sean Leighton, Savi-K Morton and Joenaldo Payne netted for Mona, for whom Niquan Allen and Nathaniel McCarthy missed their third and fourth kicks.
It was St Catherine’s third football title, all coming after the Walker Cup format was changed in 2018 to exclude the top four teams from the Manning Cup.
