Domino president links tiles to sports science in fascinating presentation
HUMBERT Davis, a man with a passion for numbers and tiles, stood before a group of eager students at Papine, sharing an unconventional yet fascinating concept — the link between domino and sports science.
As president of the National Association of Domino Bodies (NABD), Davis had a unique perspective on how the game can be a powerful tool for teaching mathematics and comprehension.
“The beauty of domino, my friends, is that it’s not just a game of chance, it’s a game of strategy, of calculation, of spatial awareness — and that’s where sports science comes in,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
He went on to explain how the principles of mathematics — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — govern every aspect of the game.
“We are mathematically conducted and verbally constructed. Every move you make, every tile you lay, it’s all about numbers,” Davis emphasised, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
The students listened intently as Davis demonstrated how domino can be used to illustrate complex concepts like probability, geometry, and pattern recognition. He showed them how to calculate the odds of drawing a specific tile, how to visualise spatial relationships, and how to strategise using numerical combinations.
But Davis didn’t stop there. He also highlighted the comprehension aspect, showing how domino requires players to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively.
“It’s not just about the numbers, it’s about understanding the game, anticipating your opponent’s moves, and making informed decisions,” he said.
