UPDATE: Body retrieved after vehicle plunges into Black River
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The Jamaica Defence Force is reporting that the body of a man whose vehicle plunged into the Black River off the Lacovia Bridge on Friday was retrieved on Saturday afternoon.
In a post on Instagram, the JDF said a pickup was recovered with the assistance of divers from the second district Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard.
“During the recovery operation, one deceased occupant was found trapped inside the vehicle. The Jamaica Defence Force extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” the post read in part.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released by the police.
Preliminary reports indicate that sometime between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, the pickup was travelling towards Black River when the driver lost control and it went off-road into the river.
The bridge’s rails have been compromised for several years and were further deteriorated during the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
The victim’s stepson reportedly managed to swim from the vehicle before it was submerged.
