JPL top three battle for lead as first round draws to a close
Two points separate the top three teams in the Jamaica Premier League as the first round of the competition comes to a close this weekend with six games Sunday and another on Monday.
Montego Bay United will return to Jarrett Park after more than a decade away from the city’s revered facility; second-placed Racing United, still buzzing from their midweek upset over Mount Pleasant FA, will host Harbour View at Ferdie Neita Park and third-placed Portmore United will be away to Treasure Beach FC who return home for the first time since the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Mount Pleasant FA, who are fourth in the standings, will host Spanish Town Police FC at Drax Hall; Chapelton Maroons will host defending champions Cavalier at Turners Oval and Tivoli Gardens are away to Dunbeholden FC.
Montego Bay will be playing their first game in the city since the passage of Melissa and, with the damage done to the Montego Bay Sports Complex, the management has decided to play games at Jarrett Park. Admission to Sunday’s game will be free in a move the club said is a ‘thank you’ gesture to the fans.
They must put on a show for the fans if they hope to stay atop the points table at the end of the round, against a Waterhouse FC team that is in free fall after losing their last three games and being winless in their last six.
To add insult to injury, Waterhouse became the first team to lose to promoted Spanish Town Police, going down 2-1 and have fallen to ninth place in the table. Montego Bay meanwhile are coming off a 1-0 win over Arnett Gardens, snapping a two-game winless run, and will hope to make the return to Jarrett Park after more than a decade away, a winning one.
Racing United promised much last season before fading late and missing the play-offs, but they seem to have picked up where they left off and are holding their own. Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Mount Pleasant will give their confidence a big boost as they take on a Harbour View team that have drawn their last two games.
Only Montego Bay have scored more than Racing United so far while Harbour View have conceded 21 goals, 12 in their last five games.
The two teams shared wins last year before drawing the third game but Racing will be expected to take the game to the former champions.
Portmore United’s stay at the top of the table did not last long and they have fallen to third place after Mount Pleasant ended their eight-game unbeaten run last Sunday. They will be expected to rebound against a Treasure Beach team that was given extra time to prepare after they were battered by Hurricane Melissa. Portmore won both of their games against Treasure Beach two seasons ago, both by 3-1 margins.
Mount Pleasant are expected to rebound against Spanish Town Police FC who are coming off a win but will find the Caribbean Cup champions much tougher than Waterhouse FC and will hope to avoid a lopsided loss.
Cavalier have lost two games on the trot, losing to Molynes United and Racing, finishing both games a man short, but have won their last two games against Chapelton Maroons and four of five overall.
Sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens are also coming off a loss and will hope to make amends away to Dunbeholden FC who are in 10th place and have gone seven games without a win.
