Gayle sacked, replaced by Argentine in Waterhouse head coach spot
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Argentine coach Javier Ainstein will replace Marcel Gayle who was sacked as head coach of Waterhouse FC following a poor start in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
Gayle has been the head coach since 2018, but Waterhouse’s poor run, in which they won just one game in their last seven matches, prompted his sacking.
Pressure has been mounting since Waterhouse lost to promoted Spanish Town Police, a weak team that was thrashed 5-2 by Harbour View and 10-2 by Arnett Gardens before beating Waterhouse 2-1.
Efforts to get a comment from Gayle proved futile, but an impeccable Waterhouse source, who wanted to remain anonymous, confirmed Gayle’s departure and the imminent arrival of Ainstein, who was born in Argentina but has lived in Panama for over 20 years.
He originally arrived in Panama in 2003 as a player for Tauro FC and has since spent decades contributing to the country’s football development.
He also coached in Costa Rica and is nicknamed the “Genius” because of his tactical approach and success.
Waterhouse defeated Montego Bay United 1-0 on Sunday, ending their winless run, but apparently Gayle’s fate was decided before that.
Earlier this month, Gayle replaced Neville Bell as head coach of St George’s College after serving as his assistant for approximately 20 years.
