Nigerian singer Mr Eazi goes dancehall
One of the movers and shakers in the Afrobeats movement, singer Mr Eazi, has gone dancehall on his club banger Dance Pon Me.
The Nigerian artiste teams with Mixpak Records boss Dre Skull and Cadenza, who has worked with Jorja Smith, Beyonce, Doja Cat, among others.
He spoke with the Jamaica Observer recently about working with Dre Skull.
“I’ve known Dre Skull for a long time, and I’m a dancehall head. We worked together on a track with Popcaan called
Sekkle & Bop, and we had always had this idea to put together a whole mixtape of sounds that explored the connection between West African music and Jamaican music. Dance Pon Me is the introduction to the mixtape coming next year,” he said.
Mr Eazi shared that, while creating Dance Pon Me, he wanted a song that could move and groove listeners.
“We are creatively very in tune and it’s a very collaborative process where we share ideas and have fun. The inspiration for
Dance Pon Me is classic dancehall. We wanted a song to make people dance, the old school way,” he shared.
A multi-nominated and multi-platinum-selling artiste, Mr Eazi has scored multiple entries on the British and European charts. Among his previous collaborators are Nicki Minaj, Major Lazer, Davido, Bad Bunny among several other acts.
He has previously worked with Popcaan, Konshens, Stefflon Don, and Shatta Wale.
Cadenza is one of the industry’s most-sought-after and versatile producers, most recently co-producing and co-writing
YA YA on Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter studio album.
Cadenza’s impressive accolades include two Grammy Awards and five Grammy nominations, most notably for his contributions to Beyonce’s Renaissance and Lucky Daye’s Table For Two.
Originally from the UK, with a deep-rooted history in dancehall and club music, Cadenza’s solo releases have come out on esteemed labels such as Mixpak, Fools Gold, and Mad Decent, alongside touring as part of Major Lazer.
