Waterhouse bounce back; Treasure Beach return with win
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Waterhouse FC rebounded from arguably their worst loss in years to beat Montego Bay United 1-0 upon their return to Jarrett Park after more than a decade, in the process knocking the hosts off the top of the Jamaica Premier League points tables.
Humbled by promoted Spanish Town Police 2-1 last week to extend their winless run to eight games, Waterhouse FC put in a gritty display to edge Montego Bay United in what was their first game in front of home fans since October.
Racing United took over the lead on goal difference when they improved to 26 points following their 0-0 draw against Harbour View — a result that gave them a slight advantage over Montego Bay United.
Third-placed Portmore United were ambushed 2-0 at the St Elizabeth Sports Complex by Treasure Beach United who were returning to the league for the first time since late October.
Meanwhile, Mount Pleasant FA and defending champions Cavalier SC both rebounded from losses to beat Spanish Town Police and Chapelton Maroons, respectively, while Dunbeholden FC beat Tivoli Gardens 1-0.
At Jarrett Park, Rivaldo Mitchell’s 35th-minute goal was the difference between two teams that failed to inspire confidence on a bumpy surface.
Mitchell fired past goalkeeper Jaheim Williams from the left side into the far corner — in one of the few instances of quality in the game — and Colorado Murray, one of the senior players for Waterhouse FC, said afterwards, “This one feels even sweeter than at home. We lost three games in a row, and to come to MoBay on the road and win it shows we worked really hard.”
He said of the loss to Spanish Town Police, who got their first-ever win at this level, “That was a bad loss for the community, for the team, and for everyone. And to be able to come here and win, we are grateful.”
A disapointed Xavier Gilbert, the Montego Bay United coach, said the loss was bad for them, especially coming back home where they wanted to give the fans something to cheer about.
“We really wanted to do well today and win the three points for the fans, but we did not settle enough today,” Gilbert said. “Waterhouse were really on the back foot and they needed a good result. We did not handle periods and moments and because of that, we lost.”
Treasure Beach had been granted an extra two weeks to regroup after Hurricane Melissa devastated most of St Elizabeth, and they came back with a good win — their first against Portmore United.
Jhanni Flemmings scored in the 61st minute and Daniel Hardy in time added as Treasure Beach moved up to 11th place with their third win of the season and first since they beat Arnett Gardens in early October.
Mt Pleasant FA, who were edged 1-0 by Racing United midweek, hammered Spanish Town Police 5-0, with Raheem Edwards and substitute Tajay McIntosh both scoring braces.
Cavalier SC shook off back-to-back losses to beat Chapelton 3-0, with Chad James getting a double.
Nicholas Nelson came off the bench to score for Dunbeholden in the 60th minute to give them their third win of the season.
