Former Reggae Boyz captain named head coach of CT United
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former Reggae Boyz captain Shavar Thomas has been appointed Connecticut (CT) United FC 2 head coach for the upcoming season.
CT United FC 2 competes in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Next Pro, which is the third tier of American soccer (football).
The 44-year-old Thomas is the first person to be appointed head coach since the league was formed in 2022, and they are a new franchise making their debut in the 2026 season.
Thomas, who represented Jamaica from 1999 to 2012, played for several clubs in the MLS, namely, Los Angeles Galaxy, Philadelphia Union, Chivas USA, FC Dallas and Montreal Impact.
Thomas will lead the organisation as it prepares for its inaugural MLS NEXT Pro season in 2026 and advances its long-term mission of bringing Major League Soccer to Connecticut.
The tall, elegant defender actually attended school at the University of Connecticut (Huskies), where he was selected number 10 in the 2003 MLS Draft by the Dallas Burn.
Thomas, who has 52 caps for Jamaica, brings to CT United a wealth of coaching experience, having led Portmore United to two Jamaican Premier League titles – in 2018 and 2019- and the Caribbean Club Champion in 2019.
He then took over the head coaching job of the Turks and Caicos.
