‘How can that be evil?’
Woman questions prostitution charge
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A cop on a routine early-morning patrol along Jimmy Cliff Boulevard in this western city says a brief street-side encounter quickly crossed legal lines, landing Kamile Campbell before the St James Parish Court.
The court was told that during a routine patrol the policeman’s attention was drawn to Campbell who was reportedly skimpily clad on the roadside about 2:25 am.
He saw her approach a man, place her hand around his waist, but the man pushed away — conduct that immediately aroused the constable’s suspicion.
The cop stopped his vehicle and made enquiries. The man reportedly indicated that Campbell had been questioning him about whether he was interested in “certain things”.
When asked why she was on the street at that hour, Campbell reportedly told the cop, “Mi out yah a wait fi catch a man and see if mi can sell some vagina.”
After being informed that her conduct amounted to an offence, Campbell reportedly questioned the charge, asking: “How is that an offence? How can that be evil?” She was subsequently charged with loitering and soliciting prostitution.
Campbell pleaded guilty and last Wednesday, she was fined $5,000, or five days in jail.
