Christmas magic
St Mary businessman transforms home into winter wonderland
ANNOTTO BAY, St Mary — In a heart-warming display of kindness, St Mary businessman and philanthropist Errol “Exudous” Green has turned his home into a dazzling wonderland for children in his Annotto Bay community.
“I have loved Christmas since I was a child growing up. I always looked forward to the Christmas season: the décor, the gifts, the food, the drinks and the festivity,” said Green.
Growing up poor and knowing the challenges of having an exciting Christmas, when he became successful he decided to make the holiday merry for others. For more than 15 years he has been spreading Christmas cheer by hosting treats within various communities in St Mary and Portland.
“In becoming a businessman, I put a twist to it: Instead of me getting the gifts I give the gifts,” explained Green.
With sections of the country still recovering from Hurricane Melissa, which has dampened the mood of many, Green has made this year’s celebration extra special, transforming his home into a winter wonderland for children in and around Annotto Bay. Despite the challenges he encountered in putting together this festive treat, he said it was worth it.
“It was intended for the kindergarten schools but, due to the lighting system, it didn’t work out; the lighting is what would excite the children,” he explained.
The plan was for each early childhood institution to be assigned a day for its students to enjoy their treat. When that was no longer possible, Green grouped them by community and opened up his home.
“What we do now is to have different sections of Annotto Bay come in and have their treats,” said the kind-hearted business man.
More than 100 children a day have so far been treated to ice cream, popcorn, snow cones, cake and drinks, as they enjoy the festivities and bright lights.
Green has also taken the initiative to decorate one of Annotto Bay’s landmarks, the Mother Forde bridge, with a stunning Christmas tree adorned with beautiful lights and a dazzling backdrop.
“When you pass through town it will stand out with its lights,” he said with a satisfied smile.
Ian Malcolm, who brought his family to experience the winter wonderland Sunday, gave the businessman the thumbs up for his initiative which has spread so much joy to so many.
“This brings a sense of peace to the community. It only shows the big heart that Mr Green has,” Malcolm said with admiration.
