Raise a bottle, raise a bar
Red Stripe channels beer sales into support for rebuilding after Melissa
JAMAICANS are no strangers to images and reports of destruction and loss from Hurricane Melissa but for small business owners, the story is ongoing.
Small businesses like bars, cookshops, and corner stalls remain closed, damaged, and uncertain of how to reopen. Every day they stay closed, income disappears, repairs pile up, and hope stretches thin.
These businesses are the lifeblood of individuals and many families. They employ staff, pay suppliers, and provide a steady, reliable income for households that cannot wait for extended Government or insurance support. Without their doors open, these livelihoods are at risk.
Repairing buildings and replacing equipment is expensive. Many owners lack access to credit or immediate funds to fix broken roofs, repair damaged refrigeration, or replace lost stock. Recovery feels like an uphill battle with few clear milestones.
Red Stripe is supporting recovery through a purchase-driven funding initiative tied directly to rebuilding efforts.
From December 12 to January 12, the purchase of any Red Stripe product results in $10 being allocated to a rebuilding fund for bars affected by the hurricane.
The fund is capped at $20 million, and every contribution goes directly to supporting owners affected by Hurricane Melissa. Resources are allocated according to the specific needs of each business.
“We see the courage and resilience in every small business owner trying to reopen after the hurricane,” says Red Stripe’s Head of Commerce Sean Wallace.
“These bars and stalls are the heartbeat of communities. Our hope is that every Red Stripe purchased gives them a little more strength, a little more support, and a reminder that they are not facing this alone,” added Wallace.
The approach reflects a simple idea. Recovery moves faster when commerce circulates locally. Every corner bar, roadside stall, and cookshop contributes to livelihoods and community life. When they struggle, entire districts feel the pause. When they reopen, normalcy begins to return.
Funds raised support practical needs identified by bar owners, including basic repairs, equipment replacement, and readiness to resume trade. The initiative centres on helping businesses reach a point where customers can return safely and consistently.
Red Stripe has been an integral part of Jamaica’s fabric for generations, and the brand is bringing that presence to life through this programme. Each purchase functions as a step toward recovery and a chance for small business owners to see their communities thriving again.
