FLA, JCF issue warnings against gun salutes ahead of New Year
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) have each issued warnings to the public against the illegal practice of celebratory gun salutes during New Year celebrations, stressing that offenders will face serious legal consequences.
In releases issued on Wednesday, the FLA and the JCF advised members of the public against firing weapons into the air, noting that the practice is unlawful and poses severe risks to public safety.
The FLA said such actions constitute a breach of the terms and conditions of that firearm licence and the Firearms Act, carrying a penalty of up to three years imprisonment or a fine not exceeding $3 million. It said it will take immediate action against licensed firearm holders who participate in gun salutes, including the revocation and/or suspension of firearm licences and the permanent disqualification from future firearm ownership.
Likewise, the police warned that gun salutes can result in injury, damage to property and even death and said individuals who engage in or facilitate this practice will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law wherever these incidents are observed or reported.
Both groups encouraged citizens to report such incidents via the 119 police emergency number or the nearest police station.
In the meantime, the FLA also reminded licensed firearm holders that they are legally responsible for the proper use and storage of their firearms at all times.
