Jamaicans invited to ring in new year at fireworks festivals across the island
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaicans across the island are invited to ring in the New Year at the annual national fireworks celebration, hosted by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).
The free event began at noon and will culminate with firework displays at midnight, with activities taking place simultaneously at the Kingston Waterfront, Ocho Rios Bay Beach, Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay, and new locations at the Long Bay Football Field in Negril and the Black River Courthouse in St Elizabeth.
Marketing Manager at the UDC, Latoya Chambers, said the initiative aligns with the organisation’s mandate to revitalise public spaces, while promoting inclusivity and economic activity.
“This event demonstrates how we can activate public spaces, showcase the vibrancy of our urban centres and ensure that development benefits the Jamaican people,” Chambers said.
Under the theme “Life, Love and Recovery”, she explained that the addition of Negril and Black River this year is a direct response to communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
“We recognise the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, particularly in the western parishes. This celebration is our way of bringing cheer, uplifting spirits and supporting recovery in those communities,” she added.
Chambers informed that the activities are designed for the entire family, with kiddies’ villages operating from midday. Children in Black River, Negril and Montego Bay will enjoy free rides, toys and treats, including snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn and hot dogs, courtesy of the UDC and its partners. In Kingston and Ocho Rios, a small fee applies to some rides.
Entertainment will be provided by local sound systems and DJs from each host community, reinforcing community pride and supporting local creatives. In Kingston, patrons will enjoy music from DJ Wildlife, DJ Sparks and Game Changers, while Ocho Rios will feature Hyperactive Sound and DJ Timeless. Black River will host Big Bad Bass Odyssey and DJ Nova; Negril will feature DJ Bruce Lee, DJ Meds and True Colours, and Montego Bay will be powered by DJ Diamond, Metal and C-Note International.
Chambers further noted that safety remains a top priority, with coordination among the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Fire Brigade, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and municipal corporations.
In downtown Kingston, UDC-operated parking facilities will be available free of charge, with staff and marshals on site to assist patrons. Adequate parking is also available at all other locations, clearly marked for public use. There will be no shuttle service this year but traffic arrangements are in place to ensure smooth flow.
“All events are free, regardless of location. This is our way of supporting vendors, creatives and small businesses, while giving Jamaicans a safe space to celebrate the New Year,” Chambers said.
The UDC is encouraging members of the public to come out early, support local vendors and enjoy a safe and festive start to the New Year in public spaces across the island.
