Money to burn?
Dear Editor,
I never thought I would ever write the following: Everald Warmington is right.
Why in God’s name would the Government designate $75 million to repair churches when parishioners have no roofs over their heads. Who is making these decisions? Better still, why are these decisions being made? Could the motive be political?
Well this time the Government miscalculated. I am willing to bet that church members would much rather meet in open air and have roofs over their heads than see their churches repaired. Don’t get me wrong, there will be a time when it will be appropriate to repair the churches, but the Government’s first responsibility is the safety of the people. Unless it can prove that all roofs and houses have been repaired, I believe this is one of the Government’s most ill-advised ideas yet.
Speaking of ill-advised ideas, who is the genius which decided to burn up several million dollars in fireworks in Black River, St Elizabeth, when the people have no light and no roof over their heads? Are you really trying to tell me that people should be inspired by watching some fireworks for five minutes then return to their tarp-covered houses in darkness once the money has been burnt to ash?
Again, who is making these decisions, and what is the rationale behind them?
I guess the Government is finally ready to start spending the $6.7 billion it borrowed, and its first step is to have an island-wide burning of the first couple of million dollars. This is such a sad state of affairs.
