A voice in sport lost
OLIVER... didn’t just record history, he shaped how we understood it

A voice in sport lost

Tributes pour in for award-winning journalist Donald Oliver

Award-winning sports journalist, film-maker, and presenter Donald Oliver died suddenly on Tuesday morning, plunging the local and regional sporting fraternity into mourning as tributes and condolence poured in from across Jamaica.

Oliver, 40, died at University Hospital of the West Indies. At the time of his passing he served as the
Jamaica Observer’s audiovisual manager.

Widely admired for his distinctive voice, sharp storytelling instincts, and mastery both behind and in front of the camera, Oliver enjoyed a distinguished media career that spanned Television Jamaica, CVM TV, SportsMax and the Observer. Along the way, he established himself as one of Jamaica’s most accomplished sports broadcasters and football commentators, earning comparisons to English Premier League commentator Peter Drury for his passionate delivery and use of language.

He was named Press Association of Jamaica’s (PAJ) Sports Journalist of the Year in 2015, received the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2009, and won the PAJ Best Television Feature or Documentary award in 2022.

Observer Managing Director Dominic Beaubrun said Oliver’s passing hit the media group like a ton of bricks.

“The loss of a colleague is always painful, but when death comes suddenly, the grief is compounded by shock and disbelief,” Beaubrun said in a statement, adding that Oliver’s death has “left our hearts heavy and our spirits shaken”.

He noted that Oliver joined the Observer in August this year and immediately made an impact on the media group’s digital platforms, “starting with his production of our 2025 General Election night results show, followed by our coverage of the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan”.

“His expertise in writing, production, and presentation came to the fore in those productions and was even more evident in the news documentaries we aired in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa,” Beaubrun said.

“We have lost a valued and extremely talented member of the team, a man who, beyond his professional skills, was a warm individual and decent human being. We extend our deepest condolence to Donald’s family and express our gratitude for the opportunity he gave us to know and work with him,” Beaubrun added.

Sport Minister Olivia Grange said Oliver’s passing has left her feeling a deep sense of loss.

She said for 20 years he demonstrated journalistic skills in sports writing, sportscasting and producing which earned him the respect of his viewers and listeners, the admiration of his colleagues, and several awards.

“With his distinctive voice and analytical capacity, his coverage of numerous local and international sports events stood out,” Grange said.

Observer Executive Editor, Publications Vernon Davidson described Oliver as a consummate professional and “a wonderful human being”.

“I never met Donald before he joined us at the Observer earlier this year. I had only seen and heard him on television doing what he does best — sports commentary,” Davidson said.

“It was very clear to me that he was a fountain of knowledge across a range of sports, and his analyses were always insightful and extremely informative. I came to respect him for that,” he added.

Davidson said he was thrilled when Oliver joined the Observer, confident his presence could also impact the newspaper’s sports coverage.

“But then I also got to know Donald Oliver, the man — a wonderful human being with a ready smile; someone you simply could not help but like,” he added. “His passing is shocking. The media fraternity and Jamaica have lost a decent and extremely talented man. This one is tough.”

Long-time colleague Leighton Levy, who worked with Oliver for nearly two decades, struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke with the Observer.

“I’m struggling to find the words today,” said Levy, normally outspoken and rarely at a loss for words. “My friend and colleague, Donald Oliver, passed away this morning, and it feels unreal. We were preparing for a year-in-review stream tonight.”

Levy recalled that just days earlier, they had been testing the stream, laughing, shaping ideas, and mapping out the discussion.

“I’ve known Donald for almost 20 years. He produced me for the 2012 Olympic Games analyst panel on CVM, and later we became colleagues at SportsMax from 2016 right up until 2025,” he said.

“But Donald wasn’t just a colleague, he was a friend to my wife and to me. Steady, thoughtful, and unbelievably creative; he was a genius producer, one of the best I have ever worked with.”

Levy pointed to Oliver’s documentary work, including a powerful feature on Olympian Alia Atkinson, as enduring contributions to Jamaica’s sporting heritage.

“That was his gift, he didn’t just record history, he shaped how we understood it,” Levy said. “This one cuts deeply, the same way losing Hubert Lawrence did in 2024. Two giants, gone far too soon. Two friends whose voices helped tell the story of Jamaican sport with heart, intelligence, and grace. I am hurting. I am grateful. And I am still in disbelief,” he added.

Renowned for his passionate narration of Jamaican sport, Oliver delivered several memorable calls, including the 2018 Manning Cup final when Kingston College ended a 30-year drought by defeating St George’s College, a moment that remains etched in the memory of football fans.

His voice became synonymous with Jamaica Premier League broadcasts, prompting Jamaica Football Federation Acting General Secretary Roy Simpson to liken him to one of the world’s finest football commentators.

“Donald Oliver was Jamaica’s Peter Drury. Listening to him commentate was a joy, and he represented all of us as Jamaicans proudly,” said Simpson, who also serves as team manager of the senior Reggae Boyz.

Tributes also came from Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, state minister in the Office of the Prime Minister.

“I am shocked and saddened at the news of the passing of Donald Oliver,” Fitz-Henley said. “Donald was an outstanding journalist and a decent human being whose approach to his work reflected integrity and good intent.

“His journalism was competent and his commentary exhilarating. He was exceptional in how he used his voice — adjusting cadence and modulation — to convey exactly what was unfolding, whether in sport or beyond.”

Fitz-Henley noted Oliver’s versatility, recalling a recent assignment.

“Only a few weeks ago, Donald travelled to St Elizabeth to interview MP Floyd Green and me about the impact of Hurricane Melissa, helping to shine a light on the challenges faced by residents.”

Observer Sports Content Manager Andre Lowe said he was deeply moved by the loss and paid homage to Oliver’s impact on a professional and personal level.

“Donald was an excellent professional and a first-class human being. He is someone who I held in the highest regard and I am happy that this is something that he was well aware of. I am privileged to have had the opportunity to work alongside him and there is no doubt that Jamaica and the region have lost one of its greatest media professionals. For some of us, we have lost a bit more; a true friend and a standard-bearing colleague,” said Lowe.

Meanwhile, Jamaica Olympic Association President Christopher Samuda hailed Oliver as a balanced and inspirational voice in local sports.

“The Jamaica Olympic Association is deeply saddened at the death of Donald Oliver. Measured in manner and speech. Sober in thought yet amiable in his interactions. Professional in conversations and reporting, which he conducted and did with an enduring commitment to principle,” reflected Samuda.

“Sport was his home and in this environment he germinated and produced immeasurable value and held himself accountable if less was achieved. A voice in sport lost. A heart in sport gone home, but his contribution to the soul of sport — balanced reporting, independence, fair comment, friendship, inspiration and character — will outlive his earthly life,” Samuda added.
