DaCosta secures fourth-consecutive trainers’ championship in thrilling finish
Jason DaCosta’s fourth-consecutive trainers’ championship was on the line, and it was a nail-biter. Anthony Nunes needed just to win in the US$300,000 Mouttet Mile to snatch the title from DaCosta, who led by close to $15 million going into the December 6 race meet.
But DaCosta’s Funcaandun finished third, picking up $4 million, while Nunes’ Nautical Star and
Tiz Tok disappointed. DaCosta’s lead grew to $11 million post-race, and he went on to win the championship by $6,142,250.
“I’m feeling good. It was a lot of hard work, it was a tough year, but I’m glad I got it done. I have to give thanks to all the owners who supported me and my crew, my team, everybody who worked hard all year,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
DaCosta finished 2025 with 75 winners, 64 second-place finishes, and 56 thirds from 460 starts, earning $83,980,350 in stakes. Nunes ended with 72 winners, 63 seconds, and 58 thirds from 466 starts, earning $77,838,100.
DaCosta questioned the fairness of a single race determining the championship.
“I don’t think it is fair. I mean, it is too large of a gap. One race can erase an entire year’s work. Same thing can happen for the trainers’ championship and the owners’ championship, even the breeders’ championship as a USA breeder will be champion because of one horse.
“It’s kind of disheartened if somebody is way in front and loses because of one race. Well, because the championship is a year of work and so for one race to decide it, I don’t know if they [the promoters] can alter it so that they can eliminate that race out of the championship running. I don’t know but it’s kind of hard for it to come down to that one race,” DaCosta said.
DaCosta’s winning streak now includes 2022, 2023, and 2024, solidifying his position as one of Jamaica’s top trainers.
