Flash flood watch extended for eastern and south-central parishes
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Meteorological Service of Jamaica (Met Service) has extended the flash flood watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St Mary, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon, and Manchester.
The watch will remain in effect until 7:00 am on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
According to the Met Service in a media release Monday morning, the broad trough across the central Caribbean continues to produce unstable weather across Jamaica.
“Satellite imagery and rainfall reports indicate that light to moderate showers and isolated thunderstorms have been occurring primarily across eastern and south-central parishes throughout last night and into this morning,” the Met Service said.
It said this activity is forecast to continue throughout Monday, and given soil saturation levels, due to increased rainfall over the last few days, especially across eastern parishes, flooding may be possible even during periods of light showers.
The Met Service said sea conditions will also deteriorate in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms. Fishers and other marine interests, especially inshore and offshore the south coast, should therefore exercise caution.
A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible, and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Met Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a warning is issued.
