Jamaican-born Denise Grant named one of Florida’s most influential black women
LAUDERHILL, United States — Jamaican Mayor of Lauderhill Denise Grant has been named in Legacy Magazine’s 2025 list of Florida’s Most Influential & Prominent Black Women in Business and Industry.
In commenting on the recognition, Grant said she is very grateful to every resident who has entrusted her with the responsibility of leading the city. This honour, she said, signifies that hard work, diligence and dedication to public service do reap rewards.
“I thank God, the source of my existence, [and] thus dedicate this achievement to my mother, whose unwavering support has been important to my journey. I am also inspired by the phenomenal black women across South Florida who made this year’s list; their influence, leadership and legacy are undeniable,” she said.
Some of the highlights of her 2025 tenure as mayor of Lauderhill include:
— Senior utility relief where she earmarked nearly $1 million to assist seniors with water bills, ensuring they can stay in their homes with dignity;
— Food security advance where $100,000 was allocated to address food insecurity among the city’s most vulnerable populations;
— Lauderhill University, a pioneering programme which educates high school students about local government and civic engagement;
— Tea Time with Seniors which Grant says fosters education, wellness and connection for the senior population in the migrant heavy city;
— Adopt a Park Initiative which focuses on beautifying the city’s public spaces and strengthening community pride;
— Mayor’s listening tour, during which community conversations to shape policies and programmes are facilitated; and
— Mentoring and wellness initiatives for youths and student-athletes.
Grant also put forth a multimillion-dollar appropriation request to the state legislature in Tallahassee to help improve infrastructure, underground utilities, roads, and lights in her city.
The mayor further stated, “This recognition is not just about me; it’s about the city of Lauderhill and our collective efforts to drive innovation, advance equity and create opportunities for future generations. I am proud to lead a city that embodies these values, and I look forward to continuing our work together to make Lauderhill shine.”
