Stronger communities, stronger Jamaica
Dear Editor,
As Jamaica looks to rebuild and recover from Hurricane Melissa’s impact on communities, it’s essential we adopt a strategic and sustainable approach. The Social Development Commission (SDC) is well positioned to lead this effort, leveraging its expertise in community development.
By partnering with the SDC we can ensure that rebuilding efforts prioritise community engagement, inclusivity, and resilience. The SDC’s experience in facilitating community-driven projects can help restore infrastructure, support local businesses, and enhance livelihoods.
Additionally, the SDC can draw on a pool of skilled former employees who were trained by The University of the West Indies’ Social Welfare Training Centre. Offering short-term employment opportunities to these professionals would not only provide needed consultation and guidance but also inject expertise into the rebuilding process.
Let’s adopt best practices in community development, putting the people at the heart of rebuilding. The SDC can facilitate this process, ensuring all affected areas are restored to be stronger and more vibrant.
