Arnett Gardens back in contention with 3-0 win over Cavalier SC
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Arnett Gardens’ head coach Phillip Williams said his team’s 3-0 win over champions Cavalier SC on Monday was a significant achievement as they ended a three-game winless streak and are back in contention for a playoff spot.
“The team’s performance was commendable across all departments. We’ve set targets for the second round to rectify our first round shortcomings and are currently on track,” Williams told Observer Online.
“A significant achievement securing three points against the defending champions, ending a three-game winless streak,” Williams noted.
Goals by Rushike Kelson (43rd), Fabian Reid (78th), and substitute D’Sean Henry (83rd) propelled Arnett Gardens to their fifth win of the season from 13 games and jumped five places from 12th to seventh on 16 points.
They are just three points adrift of the last playoff spot held by fierce rivals Tivoli Gardens in sixth on 19 points. But importantly, Arnett Gardens has a game in hand.
“The team has reaffirmed its commitment, and we’re poised to meet the challenge. Our focus is on accumulating points to climb the table into a playoff position, taking each game as it comes,” said Williams.
Since mauling Spanish Town Police 10-2 on December 10, Arnett Gardens have not won, losing 0-1 to Montego Bay United, 1-3 to Molynes United and battling to a 1-1 draw with Racing United.
They were languishing down the table just above the relegation zone in 12th spot and this win saw them leapfrog into seventh spot, just outside a top-six playoff spot.
