Alex Thomas to be assistant coach to Argentine Javier Ainstein at Waterhouse
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Promising coach Alex Thomas has been chosen as the assistant coach to Javier Ainstein of Argentina at Waterhouse FC for the remainder of the season, Observer Online has learnt.
Thomas, who was head coach at Arnett Gardens and Molynes United, replaced Jermaine Miller, who was the interim coach following the sacking of Marcel Gayle in December.
Thomas just led Hydel High to the quarterfinals of the ISSA Manning Cup, where he also coached at his alma mater, Wolmer’s Boys.
Observer Online understands that Thomas met with Ainstein on Tuesday, and immediately both saw eye-to-eye as to the way forward.
Thomas comes with a wealth of experience, having served as head coach of Slingerz FC in Guyana, where they finished second in the league and finished unbeaten in 2024.
The 42-year-old Alex, as he is popularly called, comes from a family of footballers, following in the footsteps of his older brothers Omar and former Reggae Boyz captain Shavar Thomas.
While Omar is deceased, Shavar was just named head coach of Connecticut United in the United States Major League Soccer tier two.
Alex presented Wolmer’s Boys in the Manning Cup and captained Jamaica’s first youth team to qualify for a World Cup — the 1999 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in New Zealand. Then two years later, he was a part of the second Jamaican youth team to qualify for a World Cup — the 2001 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina. This team was captained by his brother, Shavar.
Alex also has one cap for the senior Reggae Boyz, which he earned under Serbian coach Bora Milutinovic in the Lunar Cup in China.
