Phenomenal Power dominates again
Phenomenal Power’s latest win on Saturday, January 3, 2026 was a statement performance, but trainer Anthony Nunes is keeping his feet on the ground, believing the three-year-old American-bred dark bay colt has yet to show his true potential.
Ridden by Delroy Beharie, Phenomenal Power dominated the $1.19-million Restricted Stakes contest for imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non winners of four) over the 5½ furlong (1,100m). He won the race by 9 lengths in a time of 1:06.3 (23.1 x 47.1 x 1:00.0).
Nunes was hoping to test Phenomenal Power against the likes of Nuclear Jet, but the horse was scratched at the starting gates.
“Well, I mean Nuclear Jet would have been a good test for him to let us know where he Phenomenal Power] is,” Nunes told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Despite this, Nunes was pleased with Phenomenal Power’s progress.
“The only thing that we learned here was that he picked up really a whole lot easier than he did the first time. The first time he came, he felt his way around and then got running about at the two and a half marker and ran on. Today, he broke a little up in the air and Delroy got him going so he showed some speed today,” Nunes said.
Nunes added: “Every race is a learning process, clearly the talent is there but we are not running against the ability horses that we would like. We trained him very light coming into the race. We gave him one half-mile in three weeks and so obviously as the races get harder we will tighten up the screws on him and see how far he can go.”
Phenomenal Power battled with Miss MoneyPenny (Tevin Foster) in the early exchanges of the race. Going into the half-mile (800m) turn, Phenomenal Power took full control of the race and from there on it was smooth sailing. Phenomenal Power accelerated and powered home to register his second consecutive win from as many starts.
Miss MoneyPenny finished second head of Amazing Force (Joy Haynes).
