Brilliant Boy targets redemption in maiden call race
BrilliantbBoy, the three-year-old chestnut colt trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Shane Ellis, will be looking for redemption in this afternoon’s $1.05-million Maiden Special Weight contest after a compromised debut on December 20, 2025.
Bred by Bern Identity out of the Traditional mare Mete-Orite, Brilliant Boy stood in the gates, lost lengths, and then closed strongly to finish third at six furlongs (1,200m), 10¼ lengths behind winner Mohanlal.
With encouraging morning gallops and the ideal seven-furlong (1,400m) distance for this race for native-bred three-year-olds, Brilliant Boy is poised to make a statement. If he can bounce back with a cleaner start, he should take the win here. Shane Ellis replaces Raddesh Roman aboard
Brilliant Boy.
The contest is positioned as the third event on the 10-race card with a post time of 12:50 pm. First race is 11:35 am.
Brilliant Boy’s path to victory won’t be easy. Bigger Boss, London Spirit, and Mo Pai are all capable of taking the win.
Bigger Boss, trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Tevin Foster, is a colt of promise. He finished fourth in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes over a mile and was a close runner-up to
Tia Maria before that. Seven furlongs suits him perfectly, and his pedigree suggests he has the stamina to take on the best. With a strong finish, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
London Spirit, also trained by DaCosta and ridden by Jerome Innis, has shown modest form but could improve. He’s a dark horse that could spring a surprise, having raced three times, including a sixth-place finish in the Two-Year-Old Stakes. Experience could be the key for this one.
Mo Pai, conditioned by Richard Azan, is knocking on the door. He finished second twice in three starts and loves longer trips. Seven furlongs is his sweet spot, making him a top contender. His powerful rally on January 3, missing by a head to Victorious Links, showed he’s got the goods. Expect a strong challenge from Mo Pai. He will be ridden once again by Tajay Suckoo.
The six-horse field is completed by My Friend Micki and Blood Diamond.
My Friend Micki, trained by Gary Griffiths, is the veteran of the field with four starts under her belt. She’s consistent, finishing in the frame at fourth place twice, and her experience counts for something. Expect her to be around the placings, but it’ll take a step up to get near the top
Blood Diamond, trained by Alford Brown, is a bit of a wild card. She’s adding Lasix for the first time, which could be the spark she needs, but her past two runs haven’t been impressive. She’s an outsider, needing a big improvement to feature in this field.
