Five killed in road crashes since January 1 says ITA
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Five people have been killed in four fatal crashes since the start of the year.
This is according to the latest statistics released on Friday by Jamaica’s Island Traffic Authority (ITA). Though early in the new year, the statistics show that fatalities have decreased by 44 per cent when compared to the same period in 2025 and fatal crashes are down 56 per cent when compared to prior year.
To date, private motor vehicle passengers account for three three or 60 per cent of the fatalities since the start of the year. One death involved the driver of a private motor vehicle while a pedestrian accounted for the other fatality.
Overall, passengers account for 60 per cent of all road deaths since the start of the year according to the ITA. It said four of those killed so far this year are males.
Meanwhile, the ITA is projecting a slight increase in fataltities this year – 382 compared to the 374 killed in 2025. A total of 365 people perished on the nation’s roads in 2024.
Of note is that while nine more people were killed in 2025 when compared to 2024, it marked the second consecutive year when road deaths dipped below the 400-mark. For five consecutive years from 2019 to 2023 road deaths topped 400, culminanting in a record high of 488 fatalities in 2022.
