JDF vows full cooperation after soldiers nabbed in drug bust
THE Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has reiterated its commitment to professionalism and accountability after two of its soldiers were arrested alongside a police inspector in a major narcotics probe in St Andrew Thursday night.
In a statement issued on Friday, the military confirmed that it is working closely with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the seizure which has sent shockwaves through both institutions.
The arrest followed an operation in St Andrew that reportedly led investigators to cocaine during a search, resulting in the detention of a police inspector assigned to the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC), along with the two soldiers. The development has drawn heightened public attention, given the sensitive roles both organisations play in national security and the fight against organised crime.
Against that backdrop, the JDF sought to assure Jamaicans that the matter is being treated seriously and without interference.
“The JDF is fully cooperating with the JCF to ensure a comprehensive and transparent resolution of the matter,” the military said in the statement.
The JDF was careful to draw a clear line between the institution and the alleged actions of the individuals involved, stressing that misconduct will not be excused or downplayed.
“The JDF wishes to remind the public that it does not endorse the unlawful conduct of service members, whether on or off duty. Any criminal involvement by our service members is inconsistent with the values, standards, and professionalism expected from all members of the Jamaica Defence Force,” the statement read, adding that maintaining public confidence remains central to the defence force’s mission.
“The JDF maintains its commitment to high standards of discipline, accountability, and service to Jamaica’s citizens, assuring the public that such incidents are handled with the utmost seriousness,” the statement read.
According to police sources, the arrests were made shortly after 7:00 pm during an operation in the Pine Bar area on Moore Street in the Woodford Park community of St Andrew.
Investigators reported that cops observed the police inspector in the company of two men near three vehicles parked in close proximity — a blue Toyota Tacoma, a red Kia motor car, and a white Step Wagon. All three vehicles were subsequently seized and transported to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division headquarters for detailed examination.
During searches conducted in the presence of the men, detectives reportedly uncovered five rectangular parcels containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine inside the Toyota Tacoma. The substance was said to weigh approximately 12.5 pounds.
Also recovered during the operation were a Glock service pistol, three magazines loaded with a total of 53 rounds of ammunition, a Jamaica Constabulary Force identification card, and a smartphone.
Following the seizure the police inspector was escorted to his residence in St Catherine where investigators carried out a search. No illegal items were reportedly found at the premises.
Investigations by the police are ongoing.
