Sean Paul’s Gimme The Light strikes gold in the UK
Sean Paul’s 2001 hit Gimme The Light reached a new milestone in the United Kingdom on Friday, January 9, when it was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales and streaming figures exceeding 400,000 units.
This gives Sean Paul his ninth gold-certified single in the United Kingdom. The others include I’m Still in Love With You featuring Sasha, We Be Burnin (produced by Renaissance), Got 2 Luv U featuring Alexis Jordan and She Doesn’t Mind.
Gimme The Light is the first Billboard Hot 100 entry for Sean Paul. It entered the chart on May 4, 2002 and rose to its #7 peak on December 7, 2002. A remix featuring rapper Busta Rhymes, got significant airplay on urban radio in the United States.
The success of Gimme The Light helped Sean Paul’s sophomore major label debut album, Dutty Rock, achieve a Top 10 placing on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The song also made charts in Switzerland, Sweden, Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Australia and Canada. It peaked at #5 in the United Kingdom and charted at #3 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs, #26 on Pop Airplay, #4 on Rhythmic Airplay and #3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Produced by the Miami-based Black Shadow Records, Gimme The Light is featured on the popular Buzz riddim.
