Alleged armed robber claims he bought, not stole, phone
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A frightening encounter at a Pitfour, St James, shop on October 17 has landed Chad Dennis before the parish court. He is charged with robbery with aggravation after allegedly holding a worker at gunpoint then taking $7,000 and a Samsung Galaxy phone.
According to court documents, the complainant was at work around 8:50 pm when she noticed a man outside the shop behaving suspiciously. She reportedly saw a gun in his waistband and attempted to run, but he caught up with her, forced her back into the shop, and demanded money. The allegations are that, at gunpoint, she handed over $7,000, and the accused also took her phone before fleeing the scene.
The police were contacted, and a report was filed at the Irwin Police Station.
On December 22 the complainant visited the Montego Bay Police Station and identified a phone shown to her as hers. Acting on this information, officers approached Dennis in the holding area. When shown the phone he reportedly said, “Yes, a buy mi buy it fi $6,000 from a youth named Maxwell.”
Under caution, he added, “A somebody mi buy it from, and dem seh a mi rob di people dem.”
When Dennis appeared before Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton Wednesday, the court clerk noted that a statement from the arresting officer is still outstanding.
Dennis had previously been offered bail of $200,000 with up to two sureties and reporting conditions, but has not yet taken it up. Judge Fairclough-Hylton set the matter for mention on January 21, with Dennis’s bail offer still available.
