Strong start to track season at JC Dev Meet

FORMER Calabar High star Robert Miller, now at Hydel High, stole the show at the Purewater/R Danny Williams/JC Development Meet, establishing two records in the 110m and 400m hurdles events yesterday.

Miller, who fell at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last year while looking a sure winner in the 400 hurdles, looked superb in capturing the event in a splendid 51.10 seconds. The previous record was 52.35.

Miller lowered that while winning heat 3, ahead of Jahvanie Tyrell of Kington College (KC) in 51.85, who was also below the old mark, as was third-placed Rojay Black of JC with 52.00.

Miller returned later and smashed the Class One 110 hurdles, clocking 13.76 below the previous record of 13.83. KC’s Michael Dwyer was second with 14.01 and Davion Myers of Buff Bay High third in 14.10.

In the Girls’ Class One 400 hurdles Marria Crosfield of Edwin Allen won that event in a personal best of 1:02.66 minutes.

KC’s Brandon Bennett looked good in capturing the Class Two 400 hurdles in a personal best of 54.14, ahead of Jhabarie Whyte of Vere Technical who was second best with 56.06.

Calabar’s Divondrae Matthews was quickest in the Class Two 110 hurdles, clocking 13.80 ahead of Gregory Williams with 14.11. The KC pair of Daquan Dawkins, 14.59, and Emmile Higgins, 14.70, were third and fourth respectively.

Tianna Marshall of Wolmer’s Girls’ continued where she left off last season, winning the Class One 100m hurdles in 13.66, ahead of Holmwood Technical’s Regina Bailey in 14.10 and Joi-Anne Russell of Immaculate Conception High with 14.69.

Adrian Phillips of JC took the Class Three 100m hurdles in 13.90 seconds, ahead of Calabar’s Alex Lewis in 14.21. Drequan Jones of KC was third overall in 14.23.

Host JC showed their prowess in the 800m, culminating with Samuel Creary taking the Class One in 1:52.56. The record is 1:51.38.

He had to work hard to hold off Dujhauntai Lewis of Calabar who chased him all the way and was second in 1:53.08, ahead of KC’s Nashason Ruto in 1:53.58.

However, arguably the race of the meet that had everyone on their feet saw JC’s Rikardo Lee chased and caught by huge favourite Julius Itubo of KC in the Class Three 800m. They battled the last 100m side by side to the line. Lee won in 2:02.94 and Itubo was second in 2:02.96.

Meanwhile, World 200m bronze medallist Shanoya Douglas, who switched from Muschette High to Holland High, won the Class One 400m in 54.30. Alphansus Davis High’s Shanikea Lindsay was second best with 55.44. Kellyann Carr of Edwin Allen easily won her heat in 56.22 and was fourth-best overall.

Daniel Francis of Alphansus Davis was fastest in the Boys’ Class One 400m with a record 47.39. Ian Barker of St Catherine High clocked 47.54, which was also below the previous record of 48.82. Sanjay Seymore of Williams Knibb was third best with 47.68.
