Former Refugee Camp rapper John Forté dies at 50
Grammy-nominated rapper and producer John Forté, best known for his work as a member of Fugees associate Refugee Camp All-Stars, has died.
Forté died suddenly at his home in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts on Monday, according to the MV Times. He was 50 years old.
He is primarily known for his work in the 1990s as a member of the Refugee Camp All-Stars musical collective and his production on the critically-acclaimed Fugees album, The Score, for which he was nominated for a Grammy.
Forté was slapped with cocaine-related charges in the early 2000s and spent eight years in prison before his sentence was commuted by then US President George W Bush in 2008.
Fugees founding member Wyclef Jean paid tribute to Forté in a post to Instagram on Tuesday.
“This one hurts my brother John Forté has joined the Angels,” Wyclef wrote, adding “Legends never Die … R I P my Refugee brother.”
