Gov’t to launch shelter recovery programme
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness is set to launch the Shelter Recovery Programme (SRP) on Thursday, aimed at providing support to households affected by Hurricane Melissa through reconstruction and rehabilitation assistance.
The announcement was made by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr, during a post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday.
“The Shelter Recovery Programme will be the overarching, the umbrella programme, for all of the components relating to the provision of support for the impacted households in terms of their restoration, particularly their reconstruction and rehabilitation,” Charles Jr said.
He noted that the programme will be implemented through a collaboration between the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Office of the Prime Minister.
According to the minister, the SRP represents a deliberate government effort to deliver emergency relief and recovery support to Jamaicans in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island on October 28, 2025.
