Nautical Star set to spice up St Catherine Cup feature
The St Catherine Cup, a 6-furlong (1,200m) Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and up, headlines tomorrow’s eight-race card. Nautical Star, a highly rated contender, is set to return and promises to make the event exciting.
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at each runner and their chances of winning.
1. DIVINE FORCE (USA): (6 b h by Alternation – Dance America) – Struggling lately, and it’s unlikely that Divine Force will turn things around here.
2. INSPIRE FORCE (USA): (6 ch h by Union Jackson – Exotic Design) – Not looking good for this one, might get left behind.
3. NAUTICAL STAR (USA): (6 dk d/br h by Dixie Chatter – Kiss Me Chocolate) – The top contender on paper, Nautical Star is stepping down two classes, training well, and will be looking for redemption after a ninth-place finish in the Mouttet Mile last year. He should turn this race into a one-sided affair and get his first win on local soil.
4. TAURUS BOY (USA): (8 b h by Speightster – Mc Duffie) – Has no chance of winning.
5. CHAMPION BUBBLER (USA): 7 b m by Tapiture – Countess Clare) – Finished second by 4 ¾ lengths behind Zulu Warrior over the 5-straight (1,000m) course on January 3. Champion Bubbler also goes well on the bend and should do well here.
6. ORO ORO (USA): (5 b m by Collected – Star Torina) – Won last time, but a repeat win is unlikely.
7. GALOPIN DE VELOZ: (5 ch h by Sensational Slam – Woman Is Boss) – Did well to reach this level, but might struggle against stronger competition.
8. SENSATIONAL SOUL: (4 ch c by Soul Warrior – Red God) – Can safely be bypassed.
9. WALL STREET TRADER (USA): (7 dk b/br g by Vancouver – Selva) – Capable runner who was fifth by 6 ½ lengths behind Girvano and Of a Revolution in the Miracle Cup over 7 furlongs on January 1. Wall Street Trader is better suited to this distance, and given his speed, he should give the favouirte most to do here.
10. OIL MACHINE: (5 ch h Bern Identity – Keep the Faith) – Ran a brave race to finish a close fourth to Provident on January 1 over 9 furlongs and 25 yards. This reduction in distance should not be an issue and Oil Machine should go home earning here.
11. MAJOR DANGER (USA): (6 b h by Majestic City – Clean Eleven) – Consistent but hasn’t won in a while, unlikely to start now.
12. MARK MY IDENTITY: (4 ch c by Bern Identity – Sweet Like Sugar) – Has won four races last season. Mark My Identity’s final rattle in deep stretch, should earn him a place on the board in this one.
13. COMMANDER Z (USA): (5 ch h by Khozan – Wontoo) – Always leave his best efforts for the straight course. However, Commander Z is talented enough to run well here.
