Sippin on Sunshine takes second win of season
SIPPIN on Sunshine, trained by Winston Morris and ridden by Conrod Ellis, secured her second win of the season with a bold, front-running effort in the three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming event ($700,000-$600,000) at Caymanas Park on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
The race, which also included native-bred five-year-olds and upward and imported six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four), was run over 5½ furlongs (1,100m) and saw Sippin on Sunshine winning by a length and a half in a time of 1:09.1 (24.0 x 47.4 x 1:01.3).
Sippin on Sunshine broke off well at the start of the race and quickly assumed the lead ahead of
Battle Angel (Raddesh Roman) and Hickory Slim (Christopher Mamdeen). Going into the half-mile (800m) turn, Ellis let loose the notch a bit on Sippin on Sunshine and the five-year-old bay mare began to open up on rivals.
Turning for home on a merry clip, Sippin on Sunshine was well clear ahead of rivals, and although she was shortening a bit inside the final stage of the race, she had done enough to hold on to the win. Battle Angel finished second ahead of Brompton Alex (Richie Shakes) in third place.
