Holness expresses condolences to Spain after deadly train crash
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness has expressed condolences to Spain following a Sunday evening train crash in the country that claimed 41 lives.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Jamaica, I wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the people of Spain following the devastating train collision in Adamuz,” the prime minister said in a statement shared on X.
“With the death toll now reaching 41, the magnitude of this loss is a heavy burden that resonates far beyond Spain’s borders,” he added.
The crash on Sunday involved a train travelling from Malaga to Madrid. The train derailed near Adamuz in Andalusia before crossing onto another track and crashing into an oncoming train, which also derailed.
Reflecting on Spain’s profound support and friendship to the country after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, where over 50 Jamaicans died, Holness expressed empathy with the families now mourning in the European country.
“We understand the silence that falls over a nation when so many are taken too soon. To the families who have lost loved ones, and to the many who remain injured, Jamaica’s prayers are with you as you observe these days of national mourning,” he said.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” Holness added.
Spain has suffered another deadly incident since the crash on Sunday.
On Tuesday, a train driver was killed, and 37 other people were injured after their commuter train hit a retaining wall that fell onto the tracks.
