MBU look to extend JPL lead today
Leaders Montego Bay United (MBU) will seek to open up a six-point gap over the rest of the field when they take on last-placed Spanish Town Police FC at Royal Lakes in one of two rescheduled Jamaica Premier League (JPL) games today.
MBU’s winning run of three straight games ended on Sunday when they were held 0-0 by third placed Portmore United and are on 36 points, three more than second placed Racing United, with Portmore two points back.
Also today, defending champions Cavalier, in sixth place on 23 points from 15 games, will host 10th placed Dunbeholden at Stadium East.
Another five games will be played tomorrow.
In addition to welcoming back Dwight Merrick and Jourdain Fletcher, who were on duty with the national team against Grenada on Sunday, MBU could also include 17 year old Haitian sensation Franco Célestin, who signed with the western based club earlier this week.
Celestin, who was part of the Mount Pleasant FA team last season and who scored at the most recent FIFA Under 17 World Cup, is one of many additions to the MBU squad in this transfer window.
The return of Merrick and Fletcher, who have accounted for 16 of their 30 goals scored so far, will add teeth to the MBU attack that was held in check by Portmore at home on Sunday.
MBU won the first round game 3-1 and if they can get it together today, could seek to boost their goal-difference.
Spanish Town Police have made wholesale changes with new owners and technical staff but that has not yet helped as they have lost their last three games after edging fellow relegation-threatened club Treasure Beach 1-0.
Cavalier have not lost to Dunbeholden FC since the 2021-22 season, winning the last eight meetings between the teams and will hope to avoid any slip ups after not playing since their 0-0 draw against Waterhouse FC on January 11th.
Dunbeholden have given up leads in their last two games and had to settle for draws. They also lost their top scorer, Nicholas Nelson, who returned to Molynes United.
Dunbeholden’s strength is their defence that has given up only eight goals in 15 games and they take on a Cavalier attack that has failed to score in their last two games.
